What is the difference between a public and a private group?

Updated over a month ago

Public groups allow users in the set audience to join instantly, with membership visible by default unless adjusted by the group admin. Private groups require an application and approval, with membership hidden by default.

Public Groups

Public groups are available to all users in the set audience. Any user within that audience can click to join the group.

By default, membership in public groups is visible on the user's profile and in the School Directory. Group Admin can control the membership visibility in the Add/Edit Group interface.

Private Groups

Private groups require an application. To join a private group, the user needs to click Apply. This Apply action may prompt the user to complete a quick application form with only three questions. The group admin will either approve or reject the application.

By default, membership in private groups is not visible in the user's profile or the School Directory. Group Admin can control the membership visibility in the Add/Edit Group interface.

What is the optimal group type for my group?

If the group has specific requirements or an approval process for membership, it should be set as a private group. Otherwise, set the group to public so users can join without approval.
