You don't have to publish your group immediately - you can keep it in draft mode. A group in draft mode is only visible to you, the group's creator. If your school has other admins who have created groups and are still keeping them in draft mode, note that you don't have access to them.

When you are ready to publish your group, click the Publish button on the group's detail page.
